A tired semi-detached home in need of enlargement and modernisation to suit the clients growing family.
Our brief was to reconsider the existing layout, and dually add floor area to increase available habitable space. The exercise needed to enlarge the kitchen-living-dining space, encouraging social cohesion, include the provision of larger bedrooms and the introduction of an ensuite, all the while rethinking the existing external facade - blending it with the proposed extension harmoniously and ensuring a light filled internal living space which frames the available views over the nature reserve below.
The outcome was a side extension which repositioned the entrance and vertical circulation and provides a large double-height light-filled entrance lobby leading to the newly organised open plan first floor. The side extension adhered to the existing geometry of the host building, and was shaped by the existing building lines, yet set back to ensure subservience. The extension boasted contemporary materials, which have been carried over to the main house conservatively to ensure the old and the new relate to one another, while maintaining the character of the primary white façade.
